    What is a DNS lookup and what does it tell me?

    A DNS lookup queries the global Domain Name System to find the records that map a domain name (like omegait.co.uk) to its underlying IP addresses (A records), mail servers (MX), name servers (NS), text records (TXT - includes SPF, DKIM, DMARC), and more. It is the first diagnostic step for any website, email or hosting issue.

    What are A, MX, TXT, NS, CNAME and SOA records?

    A: IPv4 address of the server. AAAA: IPv6 address. MX: mail server priorities. TXT: free-form text used for SPF, DKIM, DMARC email authentication and domain verification (Google, Microsoft 365). NS: authoritative name servers. CNAME: alias to another hostname. SOA: start of authority - the master record for the zone.

    How do I check if my email is set up correctly with SPF, DKIM and DMARC?

    Look at the TXT records returned by this tool. SPF starts with v=spf1. DKIM lives under a selector subdomain (e.g. selector1._domainkey.example.com). DMARC lives at _dmarc.example.com and starts with v=DMARC1. Missing or misconfigured records cause emails to land in spam. Omega IT audits these as standard during Microsoft 365 deployments.

    Why are my DNS changes not showing up?

    DNS records are cached worldwide by your local resolver, your ISP, and intermediate DNS servers. Propagation can take up to 48 hours, although most changes complete within 1-4 hours. Lower your TTL (time-to-live) to 300 seconds 24 hours before making changes to speed propagation.

    What is a TTL and what value should I use?

    TTL (time-to-live) is how long resolvers cache a record. Default is usually 3600 seconds (1 hour). Use 300 seconds (5 minutes) when planning changes, then raise back to 3600 once stable. Lower TTL means faster propagation but more DNS queries.

    How do I check who hosts a website?

    Look at the A record (server IP) and the NS records (name server provider). Compare the IP to known hosting ranges - or use a WHOIS lookup on the IP. NS records often reveal Cloudflare, AWS Route 53, GoDaddy, Microsoft Azure DNS or a hosting provider directly.
