    How to generate a strong password in 3 steps

    1. 1Choose length: Use the slider to set length between 8 and 64 characters. The NCSC and Cyber Essentials recommend a minimum of 12 characters - we suggest 16+ for admin, email and banking logins.
    2. 2Pick character types: Tick uppercase, lowercase, numbers and symbols. Including all four sets gives the highest entropy and protects against brute-force attacks.

    Why strong passwords matter for UK businesses

    Compromised passwords remain the single largest attack vector for UK SMEs. According to the UK Government Cyber Security Breaches Survey 2024, 50% of businesses reported a cyber attack in the last 12 months, and weak or reused passwords were the entry point in the majority of credential-based incidents. Once an attacker holds one valid password, credential-stuffing tools test it against hundreds of other services within minutes.

    A 16-character password mixing uppercase, lowercase, numbers and symbols has roughly 9516 possible combinations - approximately 4.4 × 1031. Even at one trillion guesses per second, brute-forcing such a password takes longer than the age of the universe. By contrast, an 8-character lowercase-only password can be cracked in under a second by a modern GPU rig.

    Strong passwords are also a Cyber Essentials requirement. To achieve certification, UK businesses must enforce a minimum password length, implement multi-factor authentication, and prevent the use of breached or trivially-guessable passwords.     How long should a strong password be in 2026?▼

    The UK's National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) and Cyber Essentials recommend a minimum of 12 characters. For administrator, email and banking accounts we recommend 16 characters or more, mixing uppercase, lowercase, numbers and symbols.

    Is it safe to use an online password generator?▼

    It is safe if the tool runs locally in your browser and does not transmit the password. This tool generates the password entirely client-side - you can verify by opening your browser's network tab while generating. Avoid any password generator that requires you to sign in or sends output to a server.

    What characters should I include in a strong password?▼

    Include all four character sets when supported: uppercase letters (A-Z), lowercase letters (a-z), numbers (0-9) and symbols (!@#$%). This maximises entropy and makes brute-force attacks computationally infeasible. Some legacy systems reject symbols - for those, use a longer 20+ character alphanumeric password.

    Should I use the same password for multiple accounts?▼

    Never. Credential-stuffing attacks reuse leaked passwords from one breach to access dozens of other accounts. Use a unique password for every login, and store them in a reputable password manager such as Bitwarden, 1Password or the password manager built into Microsoft 365 Edge.

    How often should I change my password?▼

    Modern NCSC guidance is to change passwords only when you suspect compromise, not on a forced schedule. Forced regular changes lead to weaker, predictable passwords. Combine a long unique password with multi-factor authentication for the strongest protection.

    What is a passphrase and is it stronger than a random password?▼

    A passphrase strings together 4-5 random words (e.g. correct-horse-battery-staple). For memorability it can be stronger than a short random password. A 16-character random password from this tool is mathematically stronger than a typical 4-word passphrase, but harder to remember - use a password manager.
