Free Internet Speed Test
Test your download, upload speed and latency in seconds. No sign-up, runs in your browser. Built for UK broadband.
How to test your broadband speed accurately
- 1Close other apps: Pause video calls, downloads, streaming and cloud backups (OneDrive, Dropbox). These compete for bandwidth and skew your results.
- 2Test wired if you can: Plug your device into the router with an Ethernet cable. Wi-Fi can lose 20-40% of throughput and isn't a fair measure of your line speed.
- 3Run 3 tests: Take the average. A single test can be skewed by network congestion or device load.
What broadband speed do UK businesses need?
| Business size | Recommended download | Recommended upload | Connection type |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1-5 staff, light cloud use | 80 Mbps | 20 Mbps | FTTC fibre |
| 5-20 staff, Microsoft 365 + Teams | 300 Mbps | 100 Mbps | FTTP fibre |
| 20-50 staff, VoIP + cloud backup | 500-1000 Mbps | 300+ Mbps | FTTP or Leased Line |
| 50+ staff, mission-critical | 1 Gbps symmetric | 1 Gbps symmetric | Leased Line + 5G failover |

Frequently asked questions
How accurate is this free internet speed test?▼
Our speed test measures real round-trip latency against our server, then estimates throughput based on connection characteristics. For lab-grade measurements use a wired connection, close other applications, and run the test 3 times. Wireless and mobile devices typically show 20-40% lower speeds than wired equivalents.
What is a good internet speed for a small business in the UK?▼
For 1-10 staff using cloud apps (Microsoft 365, Teams, SharePoint) we recommend at least 100 Mbps download and 30 Mbps upload. For 10-50 staff or VoIP heavy use, 300/100 Mbps or full-fibre 1 Gbps is preferable. Latency under 30ms keeps Teams calls smooth.
What is latency (ping) and why does it matter?▼
Latency is the round-trip time in milliseconds for a small packet. Under 30ms is excellent for video calls and cloud apps. 30-100ms is normal. Above 150ms causes noticeable lag in Teams, Zoom and remote desktop sessions. Latency matters more than raw bandwidth for VoIP and screen sharing.
Why is my internet speed slower than what my ISP promised?▼
Common causes: Wi-Fi distance from router, congestion at peak hours (6-9pm), outdated router firmware, ISP throttling, or background updates. Test wired first to isolate Wi-Fi issues. If wired speeds are still well below your contract, contact your ISP (such as BT, Virgin Media, TalkTalk or your local provider) for line investigation.
Difference between download and upload speed?▼
Download speed affects streaming, browsing and downloading files. Upload speed affects video calls, sending email attachments, cloud backups and hosting any service. Asymmetric connections (ADSL, basic broadband) give much lower upload speeds. Symmetric fibre (FTTP) gives equal up/down - critical for businesses using cloud backup or hosted VoIP.
